Location: The Ferry Building. This was the film that turned Humphrey Bogart into Humphrey Bogart. It was also the first film directed by John Huston, whose screenplay was based on Dashiell Hammett’s great detective novel. In a plot with more twists and turns than Lombard Street, Bogart, playing private eye Sam Spade, and just about every great character actor on the Warner Bros. lot chase all over San Francisco in pursuit of the priceless bird—or, as Spade describes it, “the stuff dreams are made of.” The Ferry Building is a survivor of the 1906 earthquake that stands at the foot of Market Street overlooking San Francisco Bay.
