Although FBI agents interviewed a suburban Chicago man in 2006 for allegedly seeking a hit man to murder his wife, they reportedly never told her about their suspicions.

According to prosecutors, it wasn’t until a recent court hearing that Rebecca Bachner heard about the hit man solicitation or a $5 million life insurance policy that her husband, Edward Bachner IV, allegedly took out on her, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Yet, in a criminal case that seems to become more bizarre by the moment, Edward Bachner, who is being held without bail, was charged last week with illegal possession of a deadly neurotoxin that can be derived from the pufferfish. He allegedly ordered it from a California company, posing as a doctor, and authorities are trying to figure out what happened to much of it.

Meanwhile, it appears that there may have been more that his wife didn’t know: “During searches of the couple’s home that began with a June 30 raid, authorities found two passports—one of them expired—phony Central Intelligence Agency credentials and weapons that included a Glock 9 mm pistol, five garrotes and 50 knives,” the Tribune recounts, relying on information from Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Karner.

James Marcus, a lawyer for the husband, says he doesn’t consider the hit man allegation serious, since the FBI never charged Edward Bachner and never alerted Rebecca Bachner of its investigation, even as she continued to reside with her husband in their Lake in the Hills home.
