After marrying a lawyer and moving into his Indiana home, Yvonne Vanderaa (now Yvonne Parkinson) tried to do the right thing.

She probably could have made a profit by selling her own West Lafayette home, which she got from Habitat for Humanity. But instead she tried to give it back to the agency, knowing others in need would be eager to move into it, reports WLFI.

In response, the nonprofit said Parkinson is in default, although her payments are up to date, because she is no longer living in the home, which puts her at risk of being sued for foreclosure and having her credit damaged, the article recounts.

Fortunately, she didn’t have to look far for a legal champion: Her husband, Michael Parkinson, is also serving as her attorney in the matter.

“In all my years of legal practice, I have never encountered anything so patently absurd in my life,” he tells the station.

A lawyer for Habitat for Humanity declined to WLFI’s request for comment.

The house is now on the market.
