Citing a need to address health issues, the chairman of Mayer Brown announced today that he is stepping down.

James D. Holzhauer, who has been chair for two years, plans to remain at the helm no later than Jan. 1, but will leave sooner if a replacement can be found.

The firm, in a news release, didn’t offer details about the health issues, other than to say they are serious, but “manageable with the proper care and attention.”

In a subsequent interview with Am Law Daily, Holzhauer, said, “[Management has] taken a toll on my family, and it’s taken a toll on my health. And now it’s time to take care of myself.”

In the release, the 60-year-old Holzhauer took pride in serving a leadership role while Mayer Brown extended its geographic footprint.

“Now it is up to the next generation of leadership to build on this foundation and further strengthen our standing as a premier global firm,” Holzhauer said in the release.

Holzhauer, who has served on the firm’s policy and planning committee since 1998 and was general counsel from 1992 to 2007, intends to remain a partner in the firm’s Supreme Court and appellate practice group.
