A client who kidnapped his lawyer at knifepoint before dumping him in a nature preserve could be sentenced today to up to 50 years in prison.

The lawyer, Thomas Hamer, suffered only minor injuries in the July incident, according to the Anderson, Ind., Herald Bulletin. The client, Richard Hudson, pleaded guilty but mentally ill in December to charges of kidnapping and robbery, according to the story.

Prosecutors say Hudson held a knife to the lawyer’s throat as the two were returning from a hearing on Social Security disability benefits in Indianapolis. Hudson tied up Hamer before dumping him in a nature preserve.

The incident occurred as Hamer was driving Hudson back to the Anderson jail in central Indiana where the client was being held on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge, the story says. Hamer had received permission to drive Hudson to the hearing.
