A senior partner of Cravath Swaine & Moore will be departing after 32 years with the law firm to head the legal department of Morgan Stanley.

Francis Barron, 59, will serve as the New York-based chief legal officer of the bank and will report to its CEO, James Gorman. He replaces Gary Lynch, who stays with Morgan Stanley in London, as a vice chairman reporting to Walid Chammah, the CEO of Morgan Stanley International, according to the Dealbook blog of the New York Times.

Barron will be working closely with Eric Grossman, who is the bank’s general counsel for North and South America and global litigation head and has just been appointed to Morgan Stanley’s management committee.

“Frank Barron has been a well-respected adviser to boards and senior managements on critical issues, particularly in financial services, for over 30 years,” Gorman says in a written statement. “We look forward to benefiting from Frank’s advice and wisdom, and we are very pleased he is joining our senior management team.”
