Jonae Devlin, an 8th grader at Hodges Bend Middle School in Houston liked to wear a rosary to school because it reminded her of her Catholic grandmother. But in December of 2010, she was approached by a school official and informed that a rosary can be a sign of gang involvement and against the dress code policy. When the 14-year-old declined to stop wearing it, she was suspended for two days.
The Fort Bend Independent School District initially stood by the decision. But after the American Center for Law and Justice took up Devlin’s case and wrote to the superintendent, the district decided to allow Devlin to wear her rosary and expunged the punishment from her record.
