During a snack break at school, a 7-year-old Baltimore boy chewed his toaster pastry into the shape of a gun and said, “Bang bang.” He received a two-day suspension from Park Elementary School, and an assistant principal sent a letter home to parents saying that a student had “used food to make inappropriate gestures that disrupted the class” and offered counseling to any student who might need it.
The decision was upheld in July 2014 by a hearing examiner, who said the boy had had prior discipline problems as well, and that the suspension was “used as a last resort.”
