Stevens riding piggyback on his brother Ernie’s shoulders, is here in Lakeside, Mich., with his father, Ernest J. Stevens, and his brothers Jim, far left, and Bill. James W. Stevens, Ernest’s father, made the family fortune in the Illinois Life Insurance Co. Ernest was a lawyer before going on to run the La Salle Hotel, which opened in 1909, and later the Stevens Hotel.
