Location: Market and Castro streets. Sean Penn won an Oscar for his portrayal of Harvey Milk, a community activist who became known as the Mayor of Castro Street, the heart of San Francisco’s gay and lesbian community. Milk became one of the first openly gay persons to hold public office when he was elected in 1977 to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. But less than a year later, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by Dan White, another local politician.
