Scenes of FLDS family reunification were splashed across newspapers and TV screens world-wide. They were heartwarming images as the more than 400 removed from the polygamous sect’s compound were returned.
Many of the attorneys ad litem celebrated for their clients, celebrated for overcoming an injustice they believed had been perpetrated by the state. But that celebration didn’t come without doubt.
Said Mary Golder: “When the kids start crying when their mother leaves, you feel one way. Then when you think about 13- and 14-year-old girls being placed in a marriage relationship, without choice, you feel different. I’m usually a pretty decisive person, but this is one where honestly, every day I have a different feeling.”
