During the contested 2000 presidential election, the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment was used in Bush v. Gore in a per curiam opinion by the U.S. Supreme Court to rule that manual ballot recounts in Florida be halted. After this decision, Democratic Party nominee Al Gore finally conceded to George W. Bush.
