Starting this season, whenever the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks play away from home, hockey fans with a passing knowledge of legal technology will see a familiar sight on the team’s uniforms.

Clio’s name and logo will be displayed on the Canucks’ away jerseys, launching the start of a multiyear partnership announced Thursday.

Clio is headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has offices in Dublin, Toronto, Sydney and Calgary, Alberta. It will be the first sponsor of the team’s away jerseys, following the 2022 addition of the TD Bank Group as the home jersey partner.

Michael Doyle, the president of business operations for the Canucks, said in a statement an important goal for his team was to partner with “an organization that shares our values and is invested in the community.”

According to its website, Clio, which is also an advertiser with the ABA Journal, has contributed more than $32 million worth of tech to law schools, legal clinics and paralegal schools.

This new partnership will bring the legal tech team closer to its hometown fans, a consideration that makes Jack Newton, Clio’s CEO and founder, enthusiastic.

“As a company raised and rooted in B.C. and Clio’s hometown, this isn’t just a logo on a jersey, it’s a way for us to support a team that’s close to our hearts and represents the spirit of the city we love,” Newton said in an email to the Journal. “There’s something truly special about being part of a sport that’s so deeply Canadian; hockey is ingrained in our national identity, just as Clio is becoming a key part of the future of legal technology.”

In July, Clio announced an investment of $900 million at a $3 billion valuation. That valuation is higher than that of any NHL club, according to Forbes, edging out the $2.8 billion valuated Toronto Maple Leafs and the $2.65 billion valuated New York Rangers. The Canucks were valuated at $1.32 billion.

Canucks fans on Reddit don’t seem too happy about the Clio addition, according to dozens of comments, which ranged from describing the move as “tarnishing our jersey” to ruining “their ability to watch the game.”

The Clio jerseys will make their debut Sept. 13 at the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, British Columbia, to mark the start of the 2024 hockey season.

“This is an exciting time for both Canucks sports and entertainment and Clio,” Doyle said in a statement.
