The legal services sector is shedding jobs for two months in a row.

The industry lost 5,000 jobs in September, following a loss of 8,100 jobs in August, according to preliminary and seasonally adjusted numbers released Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The August loss was adjusted downward from numbers released last month. The bureau initially reported a loss of 8,900 jobs in August.

The September number is still a gain of 12,900 jobs when compared to September 2021.

The August and September losses follow several months of gains. The legal industry gained 4,100 jobs in July, 1,600 jobs in June, 3,000 jobs in May, 4,400 jobs in April, and 1,000 jobs in March.

The legal industry had 1,174,900 jobs in September. The pandemic low, set in April 2020, was 1,093,300 jobs.

The jobs number is based on payroll jobs for attorneys and staff members working at firms providing legal services. The jobs data can change in monthly revisions and in the annual look-back process.
