Wily GOP Sought Vote to Impeach Cheney
Republicans reportedly were behind an abortive effort to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney for ” ‘fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction’ to justify the war in Iraq.”
They attempted to force a floor vote on the question yesterday, which was narrowly defeated 218-194 by Democrats fearful of being put in a no-win position in a “bruising floor fight,” reports the Los Angeles Times.
“Such a clash would have forced Democrats to choose between their liberal base, which might cheer a Cheney impeachment, and a broader electorate, which might view the resolution as a partisan game in a time of war,” the newspaper explains.
Reports the Washington Post: “Republicans gleefully said they wanted the debate to show the public how many Democrats would actually support impeaching Cheney, which they consider a move supported only by a fringe element of anti-war activists.”
