Willkie Farr & Gallagher has nearly 100 lawyers in its Chicago office after adding five partners and six associates from Mayer Brown.

The five partners have practices in capital markets and mergers and acquisitions, according to an Aug. 21 press release from the law firm.

They bring “the full panoply of our firm’s global strength in these practices to the Chicago market,” said Craig C. Martin, chairman of Willkie’s Midwest region, in the press release.

“Today, one-third of our lawyers in the growing Chicago office is comprised of private equity, M&A, finance, private funds and now capital markets,” Martin said. The partners joining Willkie include Edward Best, who will co-chair Willkie’s capital markets practice.

Willkie opened its Chicago office with only six lawyers in 2020, Law.com reports.

“Strategically, what we are trying to do is add in Chicago those practices in which Willkie is strong around the country and strong around the globe,” Martin told Law.com.

Other Chicago practices include trial work, intellectual property, antitrust, ERISA, investigations, governance and private wealth.

Mayer Brown told Law.com in a statement that it wishes its former lawyers well. The firm said its capital markets practice is “among the global leaders with more than 100 lawyers,” and it remains “one of the firm’s key strategic priorities.”
