White House Wins Procedural Victory on Wiretap Bill
Backers of a White House effort to extend the administration’s wiretap authority killed an alternate bill in the Senate yesterday that would have given a special court greater surveillance oversight.
Now the Senate will consider an administration-backed bill that strengthens a National Security Agency program to wiretap conversations of overseas terrorism targets without warrants, the New York Times reports. The bill would also give immunity to telecommunications companies that have aided the wiretap program.
A Senate vote is expected next week.
