Which law firms gained and added the most lawyers last year?
DLA Piper added the most lawyers last year, in terms of head count, while Ice Miller had the largest percentage gain.
Those are among the revelations on a chart compiled by the National Law Journal as part of its articles on the top 350 law firms. Overall, these top firms grew in head count by 1.1 percent, down from 1.7 percent growth the prior year, the NLJ reported. Despite the overall gain, 40 percent of the firms on the list—a total of 140 firms—lost lawyers last year.
The top five firms, in terms of head count, were:
1) DLA Piper (added 290 lawyers, for a total of 4,036)
2) Baker & McKenzie (added 199 lawyers, for a total of 4,004)
3) Bryan Cave (added 106 lawyers, for a total of 990)
4) Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy (added 98 lawyers, for a total of 404)
5) McKenna Long & Aldridge (added 85 lawyers, for a total of 509)
The law firms that lost the most lawyers, in terms of head count, are:
1) Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (down 97 lawyers, for a total of 1,735)
2) Winston & Strawn (down 86 lawyers, for a total of 842)
3) Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe (down 72 lawyers, for a total of 977)
4) Mayer Brown (down 66 lawyers, for a total of 1,457)
5) SNR Denton (down 45 lawyers, for a total of 1,093)
The firm that lost the most lawyers in percentage terms is Miller & Martin.
