Call them the Fortunate 56.

New York’s Simpson Thacher & Bartlett set off the latest round of salary wars when it boosted first-year associate pay to $160,000 from $145,000 in January.

Since then, at least 55 firms of all sizes from across the nation have matched the new going rate, according to the New York Law Journal.

Fish & Richardson might seem like a surprising firm to be on that list. It has only 36 New York City lawyers, but with 10 offices nationwide it has “the largest intellectual property practice in the country. We’re competing with bigger firms that have smaller intellectual property groups, and we want to continue to attract the best associates in that area,” according to managing partner Peter Devlin.
