Well-known trial lawyer is federally charged with witness tampering
A well-known Massachusetts trial lawyer has been federally charged with witness tampering.
Timothy Flaherty is accused of paying a witness in a hate crime case $2,500 to persuade him not to testify against his client in a criminal assault case that was supposed to go to trial this week in Cambridge District Court, the Boston Globe (sub. req.) reports. The client is accused of using offensive and racially charged language when shouting at the witness.
Flaherty pleaded not guilty Wednesday and was released without having to post any bail.
His lawyer declined to comment when contacted by the Globe but the chief legal counsel of the Massachusetts Bar Association spoke highly of Flaherty.
“The alleged actions run counter to attorney Flaherty’s well known reputation as a skilled trial lawyer,” Martin Healy told the newspaper. “Flaherty has been known as a go-to attorney for tough criminal matters around the greater Boston area,” and Healy said the former prosecutor “is considered one of the top criminal defense lawyers … and someone not afraid to try a difficult case.”
