Website Names Sotomayor a 'Top 20 US Progressive'
An online consumer publication in the United Kingdom has named Justice Sonia Sotomayor a “top 20 U.S. progressive.”
No other justice made the list compiled by the NewStatesman.com.
“It has been said that Sotomayor has lived the American dream: born in a Bronx housing project, full scholarships to Princeton and Yale, judiciary seat nominations from three presidents,” the website says. “In a court dominated by elderly, white, male conservatives, her contentious claim that a ‘wise Latina’ would bring a different perspective to judgments on sensitive matters—such as video-game violence and whether corporations deserve the free-speech rights that human beings enjoy—is being tested regularly.”
Harvard law professor Elizabeth Warren also made made the list. Now a candidate for U.S. Senate, Warren helped create the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
“Many female politicians overplay or underplay their feminity in order to get on in a male-dominated world,” according to the write-up. “Refreshingly, Elizabeth Warren does neither. Instead, she looks and sounds like exactly what she is—a 62-year-old grandmother from Oklahoma, with the patient tones of a teacher and an expression of perpetual mild concern.”
