Watson Farley & Williams has lured six lawyers from Lovells to launch a new office in Madrid.

The departure of the six-attorney team, which is headed by partners Joaquin Sales, who specializes in banking and finance matters, and Maria Pilar Garcia, a corporate practitioner who focuses on energy, does not leave the Lovells office in Madrid unstaffed, however. There are still 95 attorneys, including 13 partners, practicing there, reports Legal Week.

The Madrid move marks the second time this year that a United Kingdom-based law firm has established an office in Spain, the legal publication notes.

Describing a Spanish office as a “strategic imperative,” managing partner Michael Greville of Watson Farley said the need for a corporate finance platform in the country and Madrid’s position as a major renewable energy sector center drove the decision to ramp up there.
