Voters in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and the city of South Portland, Maine, voted to legalize recreational pot on Tuesday.
Those jurisdictions join Colorado and Washington state, which already allow recreational marijuana. The Huffington Post, the Atlantic and the New York Times have stories.
According to the Atlantic, Democrats had a terrible showing in the elections on Tuesday, but “the 2014 losers least likely to regain ground in future elections are marijuana prohibitionists.” The story says the success of the pot initiatives will make it easier to put marijuana legalization on the ballot in other states and easier to persuade voters to approve them.
Going against the tide were Florida voters, who rejected a medical marijuana measure that had required 60 percent approval to pass.
