Male lawyers and other professionals in the United Kingdom are drinking on average 20 units of wine—about 10 medium glasses—each week, according to the country’s office of National Statistics.

But CEOs of big companies and public sector organizations drink more wine—an average of 23 units or about 11 medium glasses of wine a week, the Independent reports. The statistics were from 2006.

The study (PDF) shows that male managerial and professional workers were more likely to be frequent drinkers than blue-collar workers. Those who were most likely to drink frequently were male, older, from managerial or professional occupations, and in higher income groups. However, those groups were less likely to have had a heavy drinking day in the past week.

The shows that managerial and professional workers drink more wine than blue-collar workers. It also shows male professional workers drink more wine than their female counterparts, who consume an average of about 11 units of wine, or 5½ medium glasses, each week.

“Thirty-two percent of the alcohol drunk by men in managerial and professional occupations was wine, compared with only 7 percent of the consumption of men in routine and manual occupations,” the study said. “Nevertheless, beers were still the most popular type of drink in all occupational groups. … Differences according to socioeconomic classification were similar among women, except that wine, rather than beer, was the most popular drink among women in managerial and professional occupations.”

A medium glass of wine that is 12.5 percent alcohol by volume equals about two units of alcohol, according to BBC News. The government’s recommended weekly limit of alcohol consumption is 21 units.

A hat tip to Legal Blog Watch, which noted the study.
