An Algerian pilot falsely accused of helping train the terrorists who flew commercial airliners into the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001 says he wept with relief after learning that he had been exonerated by a British appellate court.

Lotfi Raissi’s only “crime” was to attend the same flight school as the 9/11 terrorists, resulting in six years of suspicion and six months of imprisonment as British authorities bent the rules in an attempt to prove that he bore some responsibility for the attacks and the people they killed, reports the London Times.

“Three of Britain’s most senior judges condemned the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service for abusing the court process, presenting false allegations and not disclosing evidence,” the newspaper writes. It says that the Court of Appeal’s opinion also calls for the U.K. to reconsider its decision not to compensate Raissi for his ordeal.

His damages could exceed $4 million, according to the Times.
