Uber driver won't be charged for shooting alleged gunman
An Uber driver who had a concealed-carry permit won’t be charged for shooting a gunman firing into a crowd of people in a Chicago neighborhood on Friday night, prosecutors say.
A Cook County prosecutor said the Uber driver was a 47-year-old resident of Chicago’s Little Italy neighborhood, the Chicago Tribune reports. The gunman who allegedly fired into the crowd, 22-year-old Everardo Custodio, was hospitalized with wounds to his leg and lower back, according to the Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times.
Assistant State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said the Uber driver “was acting in self-defense and in the defense of others” after the gunman began firing, the Sun-Times reports. The group of people he targeted was near the driver, Quinn said.
Uber spokesperson Jen Mullin told the Sun-Times the company requires its drivers to abide by all laws regarding the transportation of guns.
