President Donald Trump’s lead lawyer in the Russia investigation says messages of “appreciation and greetings” have been sent to Robert Mueller and firing the special counsel has “never been on the table.”

In an interview with USA Today, John Dowd says Trump “appreciates what Bob Mueller is doing” and the president has “sent messages back and forth” to Mueller.

Talk of firing Mueller is “a manifestation of the media,” Dowd said. “My dealings with Bob Mueller have always been cordial, respectful—the way it should be.”

Dowd said he knew of no immediate request for testimony from the president, and did not comment on whether there had been a request for documents related to Trump.
