'Rare' Trial Against Diocese Begins Today
A trial begins today in Garden City, N.Y., that accuses the Catholic Church of ignoring warnings that a youth leader was molesting juvenile parishioners.
Two witnesses are expected to testify that the leader, Matthew Maiello, had sex with them in the late 1990s beginning when they were 15 years old, according to the New York Times.
The NYT characterized the trial as “rare” because the case progressed so far. While there have been thousands of accusations of sex abuse against Catholic Church, few cases make it to trial.
Maiello pleaded guilty to rape and sodomy in 2003 and served a two-year sentence.
