A New York trademark lawyer considers himself “the best political cybersquatter ever.”
Lawyer Jeremy Green Eche, 36, of New York proclaimed his GOAT—or the greatest of all time—status in an interview with NPR after he sold the domain name HarrisWalz.com to a supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris for $15,000. He initially paid just $8.99 for the domain name in 2020 and renewed it each year, according to the Associated Press.
But it’s not the only Harris domain name that he bought. He bought 15 of them, combining Harris with “every sort of folksy white man I could think of who was big at the time,” he told NPR.
Eche currently owns about 60 domains that include both Democratic and Republican potential candidates, according to CBS News. He said he has “a bunch of Gretchen Whitmer domains, Walz domains and Nikki Haley domains.”
Eche’s foresight also paid off in 2016, when he sold ClintonKaine.com for $15,000 to an anonymous buyer who turned out to be a campaign worker for former President Donald Trump. The Trump campaign used the website to post negative news about the Democratic candidates, according to USA Today.
The Harris supporter who bought HarrisWalz.com was just a “random man” who didn’t want the Trump campaign to buy the domain name, Eche told USA Today. The website currently redirects visitors to KamalaHarris.com.
Eche sells his domain names through a marketplace for registered trademarks called Communer. It’s a site that he created.
