A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for throwing an egg at the judge overseeing the case against him for missed child support payments.

Agim Demiri will only have to serve half the sentence, the Daily Herald reports. The egg he tossed on March 24 missed the judge, but hit the state seal and damaged other courtroom furnishings, causing more than $600 in damage, prosecutors alleged.

Demiri also brought a box cutter to a later court appearance that deputies found in a search mandated because of the egg incident, a prosecutor told the sentencing judge, Blanche Hill Fawell. Demiri was not charged for carrying the box cutter.

Demiri told Fawell he threw the egg partly because he was upset when his driver’s license was suspended for failure to pay child support, making it harder to find work to pay off the debt, the story says.

Fawell pointed out some irony in Demiri’s statement, according to the newspaper. “You understand that it’s going to be harder for you to find work now that you’re a convicted felon,” she said.
