Top deal lawyer leaves Cravath for Paul Weiss
A top deal lawyer is leaving Cravath, Swaine & Moore to join Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison.
Scott Barshay will lead the mergers-and-acquisitions practice at his new firm, report the Am Law Daily (sub. req.), the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.). No other Cravath lawyers are joining Barshay in his move to Paul Weiss.
The Am Law Daily describes Barshay as an “M&A powerhouse” who served as lead adviser on $292 billion in M&A transactions last year. The article also says his move is “notable because so few partners leave Cravath for rival firms.”
Cravath has a lockstep compensation system. Paul Weiss, on the other hand, has a modified lockstep system with flexibility for star performers, Paul Weiss chairman Brad Karp told the Wall Street Journal.
