Associate attorneys at major law firms in India are still paid far less than their American and British counterparts. But competition among international firms for top talent has sent their salaries shooting up by more than 50 percent in the past year.

“Indian law school graduates can now earn around £15,000 per annum at firms such as FoxMandal Little, while Luthra & Luthra has hiked its base salary for the third time in a year by a total of nearly 80 per cent,” reports the Lawyer. An annual salary of £15,000 is a little less than $30,000 in American dollars at the current exchange rate.

An unnamed partner at a United Kingdom law firm expressed sympathy with his counterparts at Indian law firms, the legal publication recounts. “I feel a bit sorry” for them, the partner says. “It’s a bit like it was with us when the Americans first came to London.”
