The man convicted of stalking actress Uma Thurman has been sentenced to three years’ probation.

Defendant Jack Jordan was also ordered to submit to psychiatric treatment, the New York Times reports. Judge Gregory Carro said he believed Jordan now understood that his actions were wrong.

Jordan apologized for his conduct and told the judge, “My greatest wish is that I had known sooner that I was putting fear into the heart of” the actress through his actions.

Jordan’s mother, Beth Jordan, told a reporter for the New York Tines in May that her son needed psychiatric treatment. She said he did well when he was taking the antidepressant Lexapro and even attended graduate school for six months. She sobbed throughout much of yesterday’s sentencing hearing, the New York Post reports.

Jordan, a University of Chicago graduate, had rung Thurman’s doorbell and sent her several notes and cards, including one showing her waiting near an open grave as he walked across a razor blade.
