Graffiti and telephone threats have prompted the University of Washington to post a full-time guard at the William H. Gates law school building and require students and faculty to show Husky student identification to enter.

But in the wake of the student shooting massacre at Virginia Tech earlier this year, law students worry that such security measures may not be enough and complain that more information would help them protect themselves, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

“When you think about Virginia Tech and all, is having a Husky card really the differentiating thing that’s going to make me and everyone else feel safe?” asks Roxanne Eberle. Despite enhanced security, the law student notes, bags and backpacks still aren’t being checked at building entrances.

The university is currently in the process of collecting students’ cell phone numbers for a new emergency alert system. It was planned as part of a response to the April killing of a staff member in her office by a jealous ex-boyfriend, the newspaper writes.
