Associates at Susman Godfrey, a law firm with about 114 lawyers, are getting bonuses that are as much as $40,000 higher than the standard set this year by Cravath, Swaine & Moore.

Cravath announced in November that it is paying year-end bonuses ranging from $15,000 to $100,000. Susman Godfrey is paying bonuses ranging from $40,000 to $140,000, the Careerist (sub. req.) reports.

Though the bonuses are generous, they aren’t quite as high as last year, when the maximum bonus was $165,000. Bill Carmody, head of Susman’s New York office, explained the reason why: 2016 “was not as good as last year,” he told the Careerist.

The Houston-based law firm attracts associates not only with big bonuses, but also with a partnership track that is shorter than most other large law firms. It even throws parties differently, the Careerist says. At its annual holiday party, celebrity chef Daniel Boulud flew in from Tokyo to handle the catering and mingle with guests.
