Thelen Tentatively Drops Next Year’s Summer Associate Program
Plagued by recent lawyer losses, Thelen has apparently decided to ditch its summer associate program next year.
Thelen is not participating in fall interviews for summer associates, but will interview second-year students in the spring if it changes course and decides to hire students for the program, a spokesman told Legal Pad. The news was first reported on Above the Law.
Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner laid off 26 associates and 85 staffers in March. The 26 lawyers were among 100 who have recently left the firm, Legal Pad says. The firm shortened its name simply to Thelen after a third name partner announced plans to leave the firm in just four months.
The blog also notes that firm co-chairman Julian Millstein has seen a change in title. He is now chairman of the technology and sourcing practice group. Thelen is reportedly in merger talks with Nixon Peabody. The domain name NixonThelen.com was registered last Friday, but it’s unknown “if this is the real deal, a squatter or just a big fan of the idea,” Legal Pad reports.
Some students told Above the Law that firm representatives told them they would not be considered for the program because Thelen could not make an accurate assessment of its hiring needs during merger talks.
