Texas Judge and Law Prof in Civil Rights Case is Arrested
A part-time Houston municipal judge and Texas Southern University law professor who is one of five plaintiffs in a federal civil rights suit against Harris County apparently spent at least several hours in jail yesterday after sheriff’s deputies arrested her.
April Jill Walker was arrested yesterday evening in the driveway of her home and charged with the felony of evading arrest in a motor vehicle after she went to talk with deputies who had detained her sons, 15 and 17, along with other youths elsewhere in their neighborhood, reports the Houston Chronicle. One of the two boys was charged with trespassing, and the other was released without charge.
Walker was released overnight after posting $2,000 bail, the newspaper reported this morning.
A deputy “slammed her to the ground and said ‘I know who you are. You’re the judge’ and he used the ‘n’ word,” says Lloyd Kelley, Walker’s attorney. He also contends that neighbors said the deputies were “high-fiving” each other after Walker’s arrest.
