Texas AG Writes Amicus Brief Supporting Inauguration Prayer
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott maintains that inauguration prayer is constitutional in an amicus brief that opposes a lawsuit by a group of atheists.
Abbott makes the argument in an amicus brief filed on behalf of attorneys general representing all 50 states, report the Tex Parte Blog and the Courier of Montgomery County. He filed the brief yesterday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
“Prayers and oaths invoking God have been a staple of inaugural events throughout history, across the country, and at every level of our government,” Abbott wrote. He supports both the inauguration prayer and the words “so help me God” in the presidential oath of office.
One of the plaintiffs in the suit is Michael Newdow, whose sued to remove the words “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance. The U.S. Supreme Court tossed his pledge case because of lack of standing.
