Sutherland Asbill & Brennan has laid off fewer than 15 associates, including about eight lawyers in its Atlanta office.

An initial report said as many as 30 to 40 associates had been cut, but Sutherland’s managing partner, Mark Wasserman, told the Fulton County Daily Report that the numbers were not that high.

“As every business does, and as every law firm needs to do, we’ve looked at staffing and asked if we are at the right levels to be serving clients effectively,” he said. He said cuts were made across experience levels and practice groups. They were based on factors that included the slowing economy, as well as associate and practice group performance, he told the publication.

Wasserman said the firm still plans to hire 31 associates in the fall and it is not shortening its summer associate program.
