Atlanta-based Sutherland Asbill & Brennan and U.K. law firm Eversheds have agreed to merge.

The merger had “exceptionally strong approval” from both partnerships, according to a press release. The merged firm will have 2,300 lawyers and 61 offices in 29 countries.

The new firm will be called Eversheds Sutherland beginning on Feb. 1. It will be led by joint CEOs overseen by a 10-member board with equal representation from both law firms.

The firms had confirmed merger talks on Nov. 29. Eversheds is the larger law firm, with about 1,900 lawyers and no offices in the United States. Sutherland has just one foreign office, in London.

Eversheds chief executive Bryan Hughes said the law firm has long wanted a platform in the United States. “The challenge has been finding the right firm, particularly one that shares the same vision as us and is a strong cultural fit,” he said in the press release. “In Sutherland, we have found that firm.”
