The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by inmates who claim a ban on voting violates the Voting Rights Act.

The decision lets stand a ruling by the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that upheld a voting ban in Massachusetts, according to Bloomberg, the Associated Press and SCOTUSblog. The inmates had argued the voting ban disproportionally affected blacks and Hispanics in violation of federal law.

The case is Simmons v. Gavin.
