Supreme Court Refuses to Order Lock Closure in Asian Carp Case
The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to issue an injunction that would have closed shipping locks in an effort to prevent Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes.
The court refused to issue an injunction that would have closed the locks and required other emergency measures to battle the fish, according to SCOTUSblog and the Associated Press.
Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox had sought an injunction after scientists said they found the invasive species within six miles of Lake Michigan. Neighboring states fear that if the fish gain entry, they will destroy the Great Lakes ecosystem along with fishing and tourism industries.
As part of the carp petition, Cox also asked the court to reopen three separate 1929 complaints by Wisconsin, Michigan and New York that contend Illinois improperly diverts water away from Lake Michigan. That request remains before the court, SCOTUSblog says.
