A woman is suing eHarmony for barring access to the online dating service because she is a lesbian.

Linda Carlson is seeking class action status for the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles superior court. Lawyers for Carlson say they believe it is the first suit of its kind against the service, Reuters reports.

A statement by eHarmony says its matchmaking is based on years of research about the traits and personalities of partners in successful heterosexual marriages.

“Nothing precludes us from providing same-sex matching in the future,” the statement said. “It’s just not a service we offer now based upon the research we have conducted.”
