State AG's civil suit claims church congregation failed to report congregant's sex with teen
A judge is scheduled to hear arguments in a suit by Delaware’s attorney general that claims a Jehovah’s Witness congregation failed to report that one of its members had admitted having sex with a 14-year-old boy.
The suit claims two elders with the Seaford Kingdom Hall in Sussex County failed to abide by a Delaware law requiring reporting of abuse to a state hotline, the Delaware News Journal reported this summer. The Associated Press has a story on the scheduled arguments, scheduled for Nov. 9, according to the News Journal story.
The congregant, Katheryn Harris Carmean White, is serving a six-year sentence for third- and fourth-degree rape and child endangerment, according to the prior Delaware News Journal coverage.
A lawyer for the congregation argues that a clergy privilege protects the elders from suit.
