Mariah Carey was among the celebrities in a New York courthouse yesterday to help unveil a new jury duty stamp.
Carey and other celebrities attended because they served on a New York jury panel, the New York Law Journal reports in a story reprinted by New York Lawyer. Other stars who attended included actress Bernadette Peters, supermodel Paulina Porizkova and actor Richard Thomas.
The ABA had pushed the Postal Service to issue the stamp as part of a project to promote jury service. Chief Judge Judith Kaye of New York’s Court of Appeals was “the primary mover and shaker” in the effort, according to former ABA President Robert J. Grey Jr. Both attended the ceremony.
“To be a juror is the most immediate and tangible way to participate in our democracy,” Kaye said. “We celebrate the everyday hero who serves on the jury.”
