Olympic gold medalist Marion Jones has admitted using steroids and is set to plead guilty today in New York to charges that she lied to federal agents about her drug use.

In a letter to family and friends, Jones acknowledged she used drugs as she prepared for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, the Washington Post reports.

The admission could cost Jones the three gold and two bronze medals she won in Sydney.

Jones would be the first athlete convicted in the federal Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) drug probe. However, athletes, including outfielder Barry Bonds, have admitted using a substance their trainers and coaches told them was flaxseed oil, according to news reports.
