To paraphrase the words of a popular song, there must be 50 ways to leave your law firm, and an ever-increasing list of law firm layoffs is offering many attorneys a chance to choose between them.

But sending an angry e-mail likely to spread your claims of mistreatment exponentially on the Internet is a good way to kiss future job prospects goodbye, reports the Associated Press.

The news agency selects, as an example of how not to do it, the e-mail sent last year by attorney Shinyung Oh, who was let go by the San Francisco office of Paul Hastings less than a week after suffering a miscarriage. (Details are provided below, in an earlier ABAJournal.com post.)

Instead, an e-mail that perhaps uses a bit of humor and says goodbye with no regrets is the best way to bid farewell to former colleagues, experts advise:

“At its simplest, the e-mail only needs to let friends and colleagues know you’re leaving and how to reach you,” the AP reports. “A goodbye handled properly can even help with the job search.”
