In a murder that the London Times describes as akin to a scene from a crime thriller film, a sniper shot and killed a prisoner at a French jail from a hillside outside the facility as the victim reportedly was about to be interrogated concerning a murder case.

“French Justice Minister Rachida Dati said it was the first time in France that someone in prison had been killed from outside,” recounts the newspaper. It says the the victim has been identified by other news media as Sghair Lamiri, an approximately 28-year-old convicted robber with links to organized crime.

A suspected gunman, 58, who isn’t named by the newspaper was arrested soon after the inmate was shot in the exercise yard of the jail at Varces-Grenoble. He reportedly had with him a rifle that was still warm as he unsuccessfully attempted to flee the scene on a motorbike.
