Shearman & Sterling Produces Video for ‘It Gets Better’ Campaign for Gay Youths
Lawyers and support staffers at Shearman & Sterling tell of their struggles growing up gay in a video produced as part of the “It Gets Better” campaign.
The five minute video was produced by Sterling Pride, the law firm’s gay affinity group, the National Law Journal reports. The group’s members wanted to share their experiences and to explain that gay youths can still achieve happiness.
The story quotes partner Bernie Pistillo, who says the group wanted to let youths who are struggling know they shouldn’t limit their goals because of their sexual identity. “Even in a somewhat conservative profession such as the law, there are large numbers of people who will accept them and value them for their talents and individuality,” he says.
A man identified as Joseph on the video is direct in his message to gay youths. “You are not a mistake, you are not an abomination, and you are not freak, and one day the world around you will catch up with you, and so it will get better,” he says.
