Sessions reportedly orders review of Uranium One probe
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has reportedly ordered Justice Department prosecutors to review evidence in an FBI probe into the sale of a uranium company to Russia’s nuclear agency.
FBI agents have been asked to explain the evidence in the now-dormant probe that looked into allegations of corruption surrounding approval of the sale of the Canadian company Uranium One during the Obama administration, anonymous sources tell NBC News.
Uranium One’s president donated $2.35 million to the Clinton Foundation, and former President Bill Clinton received $500,000 for a Moscow speech, paid by an investment bank promoting Uranium One stock, according to previous coverage by the New York Times.
Hillary Clinton was secretary of state and a voting member of the Committee on Foreign Investment when it approved the Uranium One deal, which gave the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the United States. The committee reviewed the deal because uranium is considered a strategic asset.
Hillary Clinton has said that she did not play a role in the decision to approve the sale.
One law enforcement official told NBC that FBI agents were asked about the results of the probe, and whether there was any improper effort to stop a prosecution.
